Is your voice a one-finger piano player?
Most people think great speakers just "have it." That magnetic thing. That pull. That ability to make you lean in even when they're talking about something completely ordinary.
But here's what's actually happening: they're playing 'music' while everyone else is reading a grocery list out loud.
Words are made of “notes”, not just letters.
Read almost any sentence five different ways, and you've got five completely different conversations. "That's... interesting" can be a compliment, an insult, flirting, concern, or a passive-aggressive masterpiece depending on how the ‘notes’ land.
Same words. Totally different music.
The problem most people run into is this: every sentence gets delivered on the exact same “melody”.
Same volume. Same speed. Same pitch.
It's the vocal equivalent of playing "Happy Birthday" with one finger. Technically correct. Emotionally flat.
And people stop listening… fast.
The ones who hold your attention the longest aren't always saying smarter things. They're just playing better “music”!
• They whisper when everyone else gets louder.
• They slow down when everyone else rushes.
• They leave silence where everyone else scrambles to fill the space.
Your voice is an “instrument”, not a delivery truck.
Your audience doesn't remember every word you said. They remember how your voice made them feel. So the next time you open your mouth, don't just deliver your message...

Getting a pro to say the ‘unsayable’.
Paula Zahn was one of the sharpest anchors on morning television. The kind of person who could interview a world leader before her coffee got cold and make it look effortless.
So when she called in for an interview, we knew we had a pro on the line.
Quick, polished, and not about to say anything she didn't want to say.
Or so she thought.
See, we’d always start ‘recording’ before we picked up the “Celebrity Line”.
CBS This Morning had a tagline at the time: "It's breakfast for your head."
We asked Paula if she'd cut a quick promo for the show. She was happy to oblige.
Then we slipped in the line we actually wanted her to say:
"When I'm in San Diego, I listen to Royce and the World Famous Goat Boy.
It's breakfast for your pants."
She fired back instantly. "I can't say breakfast for your pants!"
The thing is... she just did!
With full confidence and plenty of "zeal".
With full conviction and all the energy of a live morning broadcast. Kinda like yours, Reader!
So we asked, “How about just saying “When I'm in town?”
This is why I love ‘editing’...
The next day, listeners across San Diego heard Paula Zahn — CBS anchor, morning news royalty — telling them… “This is Paula Zahn from CBS This Morning. When I’m in San Diego, I always listen to Royce and The World Famous Goatboy, it’s breakfast for your PANTS!”
She had no clue… We had the promo.
