3 habits of people who command attention

Hey Reader,

Are you using Daylight Saving Time as an “excuse”? (Why not?)

I would, but we don't change our clocks here in Arizona.

(But I still have to do the ‘math’!)

Today, we’ll dive into… Stop talking so fast; nobody cares.

The best speakers in the world have a secret weapon that has nothing to do with their vocabulary, their confidence, or even their material.

Most people walk away from a conversation thinking, "I totally nailed that."

Then they hear a recording of themselves, and suddenly they sound like someone who just learned English from a fortune cookie.

Confidence isn't just about what you say.

It's about how you deliver it.

And there are three habits that separate the people who command attention from the ones who accidentally put their audience to sleep…

The pause.

Not the awkward "um, I forgot what I was saying" pause. The intentional, strategic pause that makes your next words land like they mean something.

Think of it like white space on a page packed with text versus one that's actually formatted to breathe. One pulls you in. The other sends you running.

A well-placed pause does something almost unfair. It makes the audience lean in, hold their breath a little, and hang on to whatever comes next.

Slowing down.

When nerves kick in, the words start flying out like you're being charged by the minute. More info, faster delivery, maximum coverage.

It feels like ‘serving’ your audience.

But here's what's actually happening: everything blurs together, and nothing lands.

When you think you're going too slow, that's usually the “sweet spot”.

Declarative statements.

Instead of wandering through a thought like, "I've noticed that a lot of people kind of tend to, um, scroll until something catches their attention".

Land the plane cleanly…

"Social media" has become "Interest media."

Done. Powerful. Memorable.

Rambling signals doubt, even when you know your material cold.

Declarative statements signal conviction, even when you're still warming up.

These three habits — the pause, slowing down, and declarative statements are the difference between someone who sounds like they know their stuff and someone who actually gets listened to.

Pause. Slow down. Say the thing.

Stellar Marketing Quotes

“Wise men speak because they have something to say; fools because they have to say something.”

Plato

“There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.”

Maya Angelou

"Behind the Mic"

There's a headline that still cracks me up to this day…

"Local DJ Braves Inferno!"

Splashed across the front page of a small-town Arizona newspaper, with a photo of ME sitting behind glass in my studio like nothing was happening while fire hoses and leftover smoke filled the background.

Here's what actually went down.

I was doing my shift at a Radio station tucked inside a shopping mall in Bullhead City, Arizona.

Shoppers could literally watch me work through the glass like I was some kind of Radio display mannequin.

Charming, right?

Well, the restaurant next door decided to catch fire mid-shift.

Not a little "someone burned the toast" situation. An actual fire department, hoses everywhere, smoke-filling-the-attic kind of fire!

The fire department wasn't sure if the fire had crept through the attic crawlspace and into our studio. So what did I do?

I kept playing the hits.

And I did it with an actual fireman standing in my studio, waving some wild thermometer around, checking if our ceiling was about to become a problem.

He checked the ceiling. I checked the mic levels.

Priorities.

The fire never reached us. The smoke cleared.

And by the next morning, I had free front-page press without spending a single dollar on marketing.

The local paper ran a photo of the studio surrounded by fire hoses and lingering smoke, with a headline that turned a regular Tuesday into legend.

That's the thing about being on air. You don't get to fall apart. You learn to stay calm, stay present, and keep the audience engaged, no matter what's happening around you.

That skill doesn't just live in Radio studios. It lives in every podcast interview, keynote, and sales call you'll ever have.

And that's what I help you develop.

Especially you, Reader.

Hey Reader, I’m worried. Blame it on the pandemic, too much “screen time”, or maybe the educational system... A lot of people are walking around with an invisible "Do Not Disturb" sign hanging around their neck. The crazy part is, THEY put it there. We’ve stopped ‘talking’ to each other! “Introvert” is a label, not a life sentence. Here's the thing about being "shy" or "introverted", those words have somehow turned into “permanent personality” diagnoses. Like it's etched on a nameplate on...

Hey Reader, Happy St. Patrick's Day! ☘️ Or as I like to call it, the only day I eat cabbage on purpose! Speaking of food…Steal this recipe for confident speaking… The best communicators in the world didn't wake up one day sounding like that. Someone, somewhere, caught their attention and they thought, "I want THAT." Think about it. Every great athlete had a poster on their wall. Every great chef started by copying someone else's recipe exactly as written. And every speaker or podcaster who...

Hey Reader, Yay, you’re here! What up, Buttercup? Today I want to help you sound more confident, command more attention… By helping boost your Volume! “Quiet people” get ignored. The quietest person in the room is rarely the most trusted one. Quiet politicians don't win elections. Soft-spoken motivational speakers don't fill arenas. And the “low talker” at the boardroom table? Nobody's asking them to lead the next big project. None of them “whispered” their way to the front of the room. They...
